Eucalyptus Essential Oil
“Eucalyptus is a tall evergreen tree native to Tasmania.”
Eucalyptus is mainly grown in Spain, China, South Africa, Portugal, Chile and Russia. Eucalyptus oil, later considered to be an essential oil, was used in respiratory medicine. The oil became a popular household remedy for ulcers, burns and wounds.
700 varieties of eucalyptus exist. Most of the 700 varieties of Eucalyptus grow like trees while others grow like shrubs. Each has been used in a variety of crafts and arts, ranging across paper-making, fuel usage and malaria fighting. The oil became popular in World War 1, when it quelled a meningitis outbreak during the 1919 influenza epidemic.
Because of its thick root system, the eucalyptus tree was domesticated and planted to dry and purify marshlands and swamps. In 1955, eucalyptus seeds were sent to Algeria by the French government to convert malaria-ridden swamps into dry, healthy soil.
